Traditional Igbo wedding in Nigeria

The wedding ceremony of Tina Chenenye Ubatu and Ubatu Peter at Umuahia in Abia state in February this year. The traditional wedding ceremony is commonly known as Igbankwu or wine carrying. It is said that the groom along with his father comes to the bride’s house to ask for her father’s permission to marry her. On a second visit, a informal meal will be well-prepared. That is also the time when two fathers discuss a symbolic price for the bride in addition to other prerequisites including goats, chicken and wine.

In the traditional Igbo wedding ceremony, the bride’s father fills a cup of palm wine for her to carry and find her husband among the invitees. After the groom has sipped the wine, the couple is married traditionally.

The wedding ceremony begins with a special dance called “Ezenwanyi”. The dance is sung in the Igbo dialect to welcome the guests by the bride

When the bride has found her groom, she will invite him to drink the palm wine.

The groom sips the wine that has been given to him by his bride.

After having sipping wine, the couple are formally married.

Guests give best wishes to the couple by throwing money around them.
